    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

    Peanuts to buy now.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Aviod VAG for parts, shop around and most factor parts are reasonable. Not difficult to get 40+mpg. Shop around for insurance.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

At it's best on twisty stuff, providing there is no traffic about, its makes cross country runs hugely enjoyable.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Can be a bit asthmatic on hills, overtaking needs to be planned in advance, but it is only a 1.6

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

I have had two golfs that have suffered with gearbox oil leaks, other than that bomb proof.

    Image

    1 out of 5 1.0

Does it have one any more ?

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Plenty of room, no complaints from back seat drivers. Seats look a bit primitive, but are fine on long journeys

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Feeble, its a take away car, the same as most 80's cars though. Not really worth stealing

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

My local dealer isn't intersted in older VW's, unhelpful and expensive so I don't use them. This is by no means typical though.

  • Problems and Ownership

Rear wiper motor died, not uncommon apparently. £5 from a breakers, 10 minutes to fit.
