  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Zero depreciation, loads of cheap parts either secondhand or new (e.g. German & Swedish / Euro Car Parts). 35-40mpg. Insurance reduced with age & £500 value.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Dirt cheap fun motoring. £65/yr servicing from trusted independent garage. Always use genuine VAG oil filter -it's worth the extra £1.29!

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Fun fun fun! No power steering makes for heavy parking but cornering feedback is excellent at speed. Mild suspension kit (eg G-Max) transforms handling and well worthwhile, despite harsher ride.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not supercar fast, but plenty quick enough to have fun without losing your licence. 8v nice and torquey with definite power band above 4000rpm. Get K&N air filter, sports exhaust & here's a tip, 16v exhaust manifold really makes a difference.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Unbelievable! 20yrs old, 245,000 miles, no rust. Only weakness is rear wheel bearings (been through 4). Had to change steering rack for last MOT and new clutch 90,000 miles ago. Otherwise just petrol, oil and tyres.

Kept it looking standard so it's just an old Golf with faded red paintwork and usually a dog in the back. Got to be a hit with the laydees eh!

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Early deckchair seats comfy with very good lateral support. Bit of a go-kart with lowered suspension. Still use it regularly for 600mile round trips from Midlands to Cornwall and back with no aches and pains.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Bought it 14 years ago and got good alarm/immobiliser. Had stereo nicked in 1996 -Armour door plates would've been a good idea in hindsight. Too old to worry about now -looks standard so probably no longer a target for thieves.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Never used VW for servicing, but they've always proved helpful for parts and advice.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Valve guides a little worn now (have to top-up oil every 3000miles).
