VW Polo Hatchback 1981-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very expensive when new, but worth every penny. Mines is 16yrs old 71k, had new battery and clutch in that time (clutch under warranty), Regularly serviced by VW specialist (don't bother with the dealerships).

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

As above, very cheap to run, look after it and it will look after you, VAG parts are expensive, but you wont need to buy many except for service items. Won't see much more than 30mpg.

    Driving

    3 out of 5 3.0

Interesting handling, over steer common and rubbish in the wet and icy. Can be provoked into going sideways. Steering vague, and needs servo assisted brakes.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

None! 45bhp of pure power, 0-60 in 19.5!! surprisingly nippy around town loves third gear will do 65mph in third. Not much power in 4th and 5th, tops out at an indicated 93mph.

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Bombproof. Rev the nuts off it all the time and it has never burnt any oil whatsoever! Starts first time, every time, auto choke is rubbish but you get used to it. Very sturdy. If serviced will go on for ever.

Work horse, respected by those that know what they are talking about, will outlive and prove more reliable than any French rubbish.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Comfy seats, and good boot space for size. Driving position is fine, steering a little heavy and ride is firm.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Basic, but does not attract thieves.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Expensive but good job done and friendly, best to use a VW specialist.
