What does this car say about you?

That I prefer to go my own way, and have an eye for design.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

One friend replied to the news that I'd bought it with an email entitled "Lust/Envy/Lust". Another sneeringly asked me to tell him the first time it broke down, but he changed his tune when he saw it in person.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Definitely, if the MultiAir versions turn out to be good.

What are you likely to buy next?

Another Alfa, maybe (if Fate is kind) a Brera...

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchise

Did you buy this car new?

    Yes

    What price did you pay?

    £12,500

When did you buy the car?

    December 2009

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes - I got rival offers from three different dealerships and then challenged the nearest place to match teh best one.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I wanted to trade in my old Golf for the scrappage discount, and this was the most appealing car on offer. My first car was a little Lancia Y10 and I wanted to go back to driving something Italian.

    What was the dealer like?

Very helpful and good-natured, with no hard-sell routines. The salesman was honest enough to laugh at himself when he was trying to sell me extra bits and bobs.

    What's it like to drive?

The throttle and steering are very responsive (the smallest turn of the wheel makes a noticeable difference), it accelerates hungrily in second, and the exhaust note is lovely (especially in Dynamic mode). It could do with a bit more low-down torque (it's a bit easy to stall compared to my old Golf TDi), but other than that I've no complaints.

    What's it like to park?

Easier than I expected - the door mirrors are massive and you soon get used to the smallish rear windscreen.

Have you had any problems with the car?

Not yet, but then I've only had it for two weeks.

What's most practical about your car?

The boot is surprisingly big, there's decent legroom in the back, and the cup-holder in the front is a useful place to put phones, coins and other detritus (oh, and cups).

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The DNA switch - adds a bit of James Bond silliness to every drive, and changes the character of the car to a surprising degree.
