In their own words

It is such a shame that this range rover alternative option fails in one of the most important aspects of its whole being as a Utility Vehicle. All the details noted are not really visible during the short periods of test driving and certainly didn't expect the towing or reversing issues. For a £50k car there ought be a front camera too. As a chelsea tractor that just looks forward and double parks every where, it is quite nice, even te programmable dash is annoying. Fancy having to fiddle with menu controls to see oil pressure and charging rates. As for the single stalk wiper/indicator unit, not brilliant. No pop open rear window. A pain, Foot operated park brake, ancient. Alight and egress, car does not settle quite low enough nor quick enough. Not being able to drive using side lights is not lawful. The headlights are good, but too good fro dusk, too bright for oncoming traffic. Had the levels checked all good. Internal storage, poor. Fuel consumption not anywhere near advertised. It gets down the road and rides quite well, but, in my view it does not do all that one might reasonably expect of a powerful and expensive brand model utility vehicle to do well backwards or worse when towing compared to its converse stae when driving forwards. Does the car do everything you expected it to do?

The issue is controlled reversing. I tow a twin wheeled caravan. One often has the need to creep backwards often swapping lock to lock,. It is nigh on impossible to do as the torque band does not produce wheel motion under 1100 ish RPM, then the transmission bites and you end up throttle and braking continuously. I had an ML270 before which could do nearly all maneuvers on tickover. Rising kerbs on or tight lock or tight parking is a real task. Lovely car but despite being a popular SUV is NOT good at all for towing. I have read many reports about the overland, they all read true about the ride and comfort and forward direction, but most are too reluctant to admit that a £50k car should be a lot better and simpler to control. I asked Fiat Chrysler, they listened and promised to send a man to witness my claim, never turned up. The garage told me this trait is characteristic and they have never had any complaints. I don't believe it. I also had an old sty;e 02 plate grand, that was also better than the latest grand. James
