Toyota MR2 1985-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

A real sportscar at a very affordable price.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Expensive dealer parts, but most engine parts are the same as the Corrolla GTi.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Feels like a sportscar and a pleasure to drive, especially in summer. Handling and steering is excellent.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

0-60 in 7.7 secs, so the books say. Engine needs to be pushed hard above 4000rpm to feel any decent power and bring in the TVIS.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Apart from one or two small problems, the engine is fairly bulletproof. Gearbox can sometimes jump out of 5th on high mileage cars.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Never fails to turn heads. Kids think it's a baby Ferrari! Rear bumper and front fender can look slightly dated, though.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very comfy for a sportscar and the driver's seat has plenty of adjustments for either a sportscar feel or a saloon car feel.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Most later MK1s seem to have a Scorpion full closure alarm. Not sure if that's a good thing or not?

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

Never needed to go to the dealers but I have had bad reports about Toyota dealers.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

    Other

Radiator, but that was understandable for the age of the car.
