In their own words

The low weight combined with a 150hp diesel engine is a fun combination. Plenty of torque and therefore good acceleration, combined with an ultra-efficient manual gearbox, makes driving a pleasure. The driving position and steering geometry are also spot-on. For a small car it's a good tow vehicle - twice used to take a 1400kg caravan around France. The car is reasonably practical. I wouldn't say it's suitable for carrying four adults on a regular basis, but a family with two young children should be fine. The boot is small for family use though. The ride is rough over potholed surfaces, due to the 18-inch wheels. Tyre noise is very intrusive (cured in the post 2019-model). Good all-round value for money: a decent satnav system, parking sensors both ends, keyless entry and start, heated leather seats, dual zone climate control, and a basic head-up digital display, all included as standard. Excellent build quality and reliability, and great looks. Unfortunately Mazda is not continuing with diesel engines in the new 3, even though the 2.2 is very efficient and meets Euro 6 emissions standards.

How reliable do you find the car?

Only two issues, which both occurred when the car was 5 years old. The Bose sound system has started buzzing on low frequency notes. It's an amplifier problem which will take £300+ to repair, so I have simply turned down the bass output which helps. The other issue is the the infotainment touchscreen occasionally registers false inputs in hot weather.
